Peak Experiences indoor climbing

The owners of The Sports Center of Richmond “SCOR” are thrilled to announce that Peak Experiences will open its second and brand new Indoor Rock Climbing Facility at SCOR, located at 1385 Overbrook Road.

Peak owners Scott Powell, Casey Cockerham, Jay Smith and Kevin Tobin have been friends with SCOR owners Mark Grossman and Chris Fox for years. What began as a hopeful conversation between two Richmond-based small businesses close to a decade ago has become a reality for both SCOR and PEAK.

Peak’s first facility opened in 1998 in Midlothian and at the time was one of the largest indoor rock climbing facilities in the country. Climbing is no longer seen as a fringe or extreme sport, and the local climbing community has grown immensely and is poised to get even stronger. Peak’s production of the Boulder Bash at The Richmond Sports Backers’ Riverrock outdoor life and music festival has brought world-class climbers to Richmond’s doorstep for the last six years, spurring interest. Climbing will for the first time, be a part of the 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo.

SCOR continues to provide access to an increasingly active Metropolitan Richmond Community, and the popularity of recreational adult and youth leagues in soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, and other sports has steadily been on the rise. Last year alone, SCOR saw more than 600,000 visitors. Peak’s ascent is no different, and indoor climbing is seeing incredible growth all over the world. SCOR is in the process of dramatically increasing our sport and recreation offerings and user capacity with the new construction and renovations of our 125,000 square foot facility. The renovations to Peak’s 15,000 square foot space at SCOR will begin soon with a planned opening early summer 2017.

Peak will continue to operate its gym on Polo Circle where it has served customers and the climbing community for 18 years. In addition, Peak’s award-winning Passages Adventure Camp located on Belle Isle will be enhanced by its proximity to SCOR. The addition of Peak to SCOR will deliver one of the best, most multi-purpose indoor/outdoor sport facilities, and most unique recreation destinations in the country.

Stay tuned for renderings and photos of the new climbing facility as well as updates on construction, grand opening, and exciting new combined SCOR and Peak programs.
